Maritime Disaster:

Investigating the Causes, Resolving the Claims
21-22nd October 2009 / Metropolitan Hotel, Athens, Greece

RTI Ltd is pleased to announce “Baltic Accident”, an investigation and mediation conference in conjunction with the London Shipping Law Centre. To be held in Athens during October 2009, the conference will be based on a marine casualty described through an animation simulation. The conference will demonstrate the principles of casualty investigation as required by the new IMO Regulations and the principles of mediation under English Law.

This unique event, held in association with the London Shipping Law Centre, will take place on 21st and 22nd. October 2009. The location will be the Metropolitan Hotel, Athens, Greece.

The event will center on a collision between two ships proceeding through the Baltic. The subsequent investigation based on the upcoming IMO Casualty Investigation Code will provide lawyers with the evidence to reach a resolution satisfactory to all involved parties through mediation. The collision will be graphically explained through an animated simulation and the facts of the investigation presented by an RTI expert. The mediation will be enacted in a live scenario involving leading professionals from the United Kingdom and Greece.

The Casualty Investigation Code, the objective of which is to provide a common approach in the conduct of marine safety investigations into marine casualties, will become mandatory under the new SOLAS regulation XI-1/6 on 1 January 2010. Administrations, the legal and insurance professions need to be aware of its content and implications. Investigation into marine casualties and incidents is a requirement of the ISM Code. Owners and managers need to be aware of the modern methods and technology available to support the investigation process and explain the root causes.

Mediation provides a cost effective and quick method of extra-judicial resolution of shipping disputes such as marine casualties. The European Union adopted Directive 2008/52/EC to promote the use of mediation which Member States are obliged to bring into force before 21 May 2011. Owners and managers need to be aware of this process.
